Spiritual Bandaids Want a spiritual band-aid? Bet you already have and use them... What do you do to distract yourself, Peaches? cuz right there is the band-aid. If you think you don't have any such distractions, look closer. I believe anything we do "mindlessly" is distracting us. Keep in mind you can be focused, intensely concentrating and still be mindless. "But wait-- what about meditating--everyone tells me I should be doing that to relieve strss AND GET MINDLESS! ... isn't meditating about achieving mindlessness?" Good question, Grasshopper. Meditating is mindful mindlessness. [oh yeah, I went there..] Might not make sense to you, but to me, it's this essence of duality that makes up spirituality. It's also how we can distract ourselves from the benefits of meditaing BY meditating... Alcohol, food, sex, TV, work, denial, drama-- all are drugs we use to avoid the pain. And so is ANYTHING that we use to avoid addressing the real leak. Sidenote: when the distracting behavior is "sealed with approval" like exercise or cleaning or volunteering it is easy to say it's good for you. In recovery we call this a shadow addiction because you can hide its negative impact. In a nutshell:
Rip off the band-aid. It'll hurt at first.
